Without doubt this is for me one of the most interesting football grounds in the UK. Sometimes when photographing grounds one gets lucky with the light or weather. This was such an occasion. For a start as the game was an evening game in autumn time there are both daylight and twilight shots. Also the crowd was miserably small (around 2,500) and as a result it is easier to see the actual stands.
The ground is in a residential area high above the city and resides next to Dens Park the home of Dundee. Street parking is the order of the day. There are four separate stands which for me makes a much better football ground. The ground gives the impression of being both new and old. Capacity is 14,209. The stands are a curious mixture. For example behind one goal there is a stand that has clearly been converted from old terracing. This is the West Stand also known as “the Shed”. This stand looks exactly the same as the New Road stand at Brentford down to the seat colours! Behind the other goal is a two tiered stand that looks identical to the old stand behind the goal at the Dell. You can see that in the disused grounds section of the site. That stand then joins in the corner to the main stand with a sort of corner stand-piece not unlike Luton town! The main stand (Jerry Kerr Stand) is also two-tiered and was extended in 1997 to run the whole length of the pitch. The original Main Stand was opened in 1962 and holds a place in the history of Scottish football grounds in being the first in Scotland to be constructed with a cantilever roof to provide column free viewing. Opposite alongside the pitch is another large two-tiered stand (George Fox Stand) almost identical to the new stand at Peterborough. This opened in 1992 but looks more recent.
I think this is a great ground. The only negative relating to my visit was that the ground was over-stewarded (far too many bodies and too visible too) and far too many police in evidence. Not only will this have cost money but also in my view is likely to create problems when none exist.
