The ground sits on the outskirts of the town next to some industrial sites and essentially within a housing estate. Again as with Curzon Ashton the ground looks bigger than it really is as the covered terracing is backed onto by an industrial unit behind it that has the shape of a football stand!
The ground has been used here since 1940 and allegedly has a capacity of 5000. It will not however survive for long as when I took these photos early in 2004 a new ground was being built along the Leicester road. For season 2004-5 they are playing in the Conference North. The record attendance is given as 5410 in 1949. During the grounds lifespan of 60 years around 1500 matches have been played.
I had the privilege of attending the penultimate game to be played at the ground on 5th December 2004 – FA cup 2nd round versus Brentford. The last ever game here will take place on 11th December. Despite the exceptional friendliness of all stewards and staff I have to be honest and admit that I found the ground totally soulless. This despite a crowd of around 2500. The ground has had very little work done to it for many years. A main stand seats 350. There is single layer open terracing that extends all around the remainder of the ground. A concrete layer under foot with a fence behind. Interestingly behind the fence though behind one goal and alongside the main stand there are grass banks which appear to cover layers of old terracing. Opposite the main stand is a long covered area of terracing. Behind each goal is open terracing. The whole ground is enclosed with concrete walls that again lend little life to the ground. Sad though it is when a ground “dies”, I cannot pretend that I will miss this ground.
